How does our culture influence the way we express emotions and sexuality? These issues, at the centre of heated debates, are neither universal nor ‘natural’ but instead reflect traditions, norms and values that vary from society to society and across historical periods.
On 10 November 2024, I addressed this topic at the Oratorio del Fanciullo in Fasano (BR) in a dedicated workshop, as part of the ‘3-Year Seminar on Family Counselling’ organised by the ESAS Diocesan Family Counselling Centre based in Alberobello, Italy. From an anthropological perspective, we analysed the cultural conceptions that influence the multiple facets of sexuality and gender, with a particular focus on the concept of gender identity.

Affection and sexuality: an anthropological reading
This exploration brought us to look at both not as ‘innate’ aspects but as cultural concepts shaped by the expectations and norms of society. We discussed how representations of emotionality vary from culture to culture, reflecting entrenched values and beliefs, and how these interpretations influence relationships and behaviour.
Gender identity and cultural representations
A special focus on gender identity and its different cultural representations was given. We deepened the theme of gender as a social construction, exploring how different cultures attribute specific meanings to being male or female – and to gender variants. Through this journey, we focused on a more empathetic and nuanced understanding of a topic that, due to its level of complexity, requires greater awareness and attention.
Threats and opportunities in affectivity and sexuality education
Finally, we addressed the challenges and chances for inclusive education in affectivity and sexuality, which respects and values cultural diversity. With a look at family counselling, we discussed educational practices that promote a deeper understanding of emotions and connections, thus fostering more authentic and respectful relationships.
